Hello CKc Community!

Wow! Hard to believe it’s time for another bi-weekly update! September has been a whirlwind of awesomeness! We have made wonderful strides in creating awareness AND action for Childhood cancer Awareness Month. Here is a recap of our highlights from the past two weeks:

As many of you know, Ashely and Melissa spent last weekend in Washington D.C. to participate in CureFest and to help lobby for childhood cancer. They had a very productive few days and are preparing a more detailed update to share with the CKc community soon.

Did you happen to catch Melissa’s interview on Orlando’s Fox 35 News this past Wednesday? She did a great job talking about how Cannon’s diagnosis changed her family and how it helped educate her about the need for childhood cancer awareness and funding. Melissa also promoted her new book, “Thankful For The Fight”. We are so very grateful to Good Day Orlando co-anchor Amy Kaufeldt and Fox 35 for giving us a chance to share information about CKc and childhood cancer with your viewers. (Note: We will post the link to Melissa’s interview as soon as we get it from Fox 35.)

Also, did you happen to see our billboards (yes, three of them!)?! A first for Team CKc and a fantastic opportunity to, once again, bring childhood cancer awareness to the masses. We chose to use the billboard message to drive home the fact childhood cancer remains the number one cause of death by disease for children. It’s about awareness, not about CKc. Thank you to Clear Channel Outdoor for this amazing opportunity!

Team CKc came out to support XL Soccer World’s Kicking Kids’ Cancer event on September 23. The event has raised approximately $30,000 for pediatric cancer research with 1/3 of the proceeds being donated to CKc. Michael Wiggins gave a brief speech about how existing treatments for children with cancer often leave them with life-long disabilities, sicknesses or result in secondary cancers or even death. Take five minutes to watch Michael’s impactful message.

This weekend is a busy weekend as we hope to close out September with a bang! A Hubbly Bubbly Anniversary Event, Hackers For Hope golf tournament, XL Soccer World family event and several private events organized by CKc community supporters are all happening to raise money for CKc and childhood cancer research. Please check out our Events listing for details.

Speaking of our CKc community, we want to take a moment to say “Thank YOU!” for all you are doing!! We are blown away by the emails we have been receiving from people all over the world who have been spreading the word and raising funds for CKc and pediatric cancer research. WOW! From a young CKc supporter baking and selling dog biscuits and a mom of six organizing awareness and participation for CKc in a corporate charitable-giving campaign to entire schools going gold and many individuals hosting CKc card club events, we have been incredibly inspired and humbled by your efforts. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!! We will be starting a new blog feature soon which will highlight members of our CKc community and hopefully provide inspiration on ways to get involved.

Our Gold Gala event committee has been fast at work creating the “Save the Date” and sponsorship opportunities for our inaugural event on April 23, 2016. If you would like information regarding corporate sponsorships or if you can contribute a silent auction item, please contact Debra Brett at debra.brett@cannonballkidscancer.org. Proceeds from the Gold Gala will go directly towards funding pediatric cancer research projects.

We would like to start a resource page on our web site which will assist in providing information for families who are caring for a child with cancer. Our foundation’s focus is funding pediatric cancer research and finding cures for these children. However, we recognize there are many needs that exist for families who are in treatment now. If you or your organization can help provide resources such as airline tickets, care packages, travel assistance, iPads, etc., please contact Debra Brett at debra.brett@cannonballkidscancer.org.

Thank you for taking the time to read what we have been up to at CKc. It takes a village and we are so grateful that we have an amazing CKc community! Until next time, keep reading Michael’s daily facts and share something you learned!

Sincerely,

Debra
